A leading nursing organization is pointing out that the recently-passed economic stimulus bill contains funding that will help promote nursing education around the country.
According to the American Association of Colleges in Nursing, the final stimulus package contains $500 million overall for healthcare training. $300 million of that amount is for the National Health Service Corps, while the rest will be divided between the Nursing Workforce Development Programs and the Health Professions Training Programs.
Some additional funding was also set aside for the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Nursing Research.
In a statement, the organization says that all of these federal programs are useful for addressing various aspects of the nationwide nursing shortage, from education and recruitment to retention of existing nurses.
"Securing this funding is a tremendous feat for nursing education and a testament to the power of collaboration among nursing organizations," said Dr. Fay Raines, president of the AACN.
With new steps being taken to address the nationwide nursing shortage, this may be a great time to pursue an online nursing degree or to sign up for traditional classroom program.
