"Nurse-Managed Health Centers", an innovative model for primary and preventative care, should be a major keystone of a new healthcare policy, according to University of Miami President and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Donna E. Shalala.
With a shortage of primary care physicians, an expansion in healthcare services would mean greater demands on others who can provide front line care, and nurses are exquisitely poised to fill that role.
"While increasing access to health insurance will help improve access to healthcare, our nation's healthcare crisis cannot be solved by insurance alone," Shalala said. "Enhanced nurse practitioner involvement in primary care has the potential to dramatically increase access to healthcare, improve care for patients with chronic diseases, and improve the efficiency of the healthcare system, all by maximizing the use of our existing healthcare resources."
The American Academy of Nursing is calling for increased investment in nurse-managed care. This exciting time of change may be the sign to get a nursing degree if you want to be part of a revolution in healthcare.
