Paula Segebarth does not just fix injuries as a trauma nurse at Banner Good Samaritan in Phoenix, Arizona, she also teaches injury prevention.
"If anything, the time I spend treating traumas only motivates me more to prevent them," she said in an article on azcentral.com. "Most of my time is spent on motor-vehicle safety, fall prevention and firearm safety."
Segebarth is motivated by the memory of her brother, who died in a motor vehicle collision when he was 19. Segebarth began volunteering with Women's Health Coalition and other community organizations, teaching injury prevention. This made her the obvious choice to spearhead the community outreach and education aspect of Banner Good Samaritan's injury prevention program.
"It was work that I had already been doing voluntarily in the community, so I didn't see any reason why I shouldn't accept the position," Segebarth told the news source. "Spending half my time as a trauma nurse and half as an injury prevention coordinator gives me a good perspective."
Segebarth established a formal Injury Prevention Steering Committee at the hospital in the past year.
If you have a passion for preventing injury and helping your community, you may want to look into getting a nursing degree.
