The Tournament of Roses Parade, which normally accompanies the annual Rose Bowl, will have a nurse as its president for the first time soon. According to the American Nurses Association, in 2013, Sally Bixby, director of surgical services at City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute in Los Angeles, will have the honor.
Taking place in Pasadena, California, the Tournament of Roses parade is a nationally televised event with a viewing audience of over 300 million people.
To take advantage of this historic opportunity to showcase the nursing profession before a worldwide audience, a group of California nurses have formed a non-profit organization to enter the first-ever Nurses Float for the parade.
"The Nurses Float is an opportunity to place the nursing profession on an international stage before millions of people, to show how important it is to support nurses because we are the anchors of the healthcare system," said Bixby. "It's also a fun, inspirational and celebratory way to honor nurses and how we truly make a difference in the world."
If you think you could make a difference in the world through nursing, perhaps it is time to go to nursing school.
