The American Hospital Association has estimated that there are more than 100,000 registered nursing positions open at various hospitals across the country, the NBC affiliate in Kentucky, WAVE3 reports.
Because of the perceived availability of jobs, some nursing students are expecting to enter positions almost immediately after graduation.
"Especially with the economy, you really have job security," Shayna Jarrard, a student at Jefferson Community Technical College, told the news provider. "Anything in healthcare, people are always going to be sick."
Carolyn O'Daniel, dean of Allied Healthcare at JCTC, said interest in the industry has always been strong and that the nursing school has more students than it can accommodate at times, according to the article.
Some media reports have said the increase in nursing positions in the country could be from preparing for the aging Baby Boomer generation along with more nurses retiring from their positions each year.
If you're interested in pursuing a nursing degree, now may be an ideal time to get started given the current job market and continuing growth in the healthcare industry.
