Shannon Worden is not your ordinary nurse.

While some nurses work at hospitals or in doctor's offices, Worden works at a rehabilitation center and specifically works with people suffering from brain injuries, which may be one of the more devastating positions to hold in the medical field, a Boston Globe supplement reports.

"Bones will heal, but brain injuries require a specialized team," Worden told the news provider. "No one can tell you what the brain will do. Every injury is so specific, and the unpredictability of the outcomes makes it difficult for families."

This was particularly true when she began caring for Specialist Vincent Mannion, a 19-year-old service member suffering from a traumatic brain injury, according to the article. With a devastated family by her side, Worden worked for months with Mannion buoyed by the belief he would improve.

Eventually one day she got Mannion to blink his eyes as a form of communication, which led to what the young man's family describes as a "miraculous recovery."

People interested in helping others recover from serious injuries and touching people's lives may want to look into getting a nursing degree.
