Nursing Shortage Fuels More Competition

Competition is growing tougher for spots at some nursing schools as a growing number of workers are attracted to an industry widely seen as being recession-proof.

New York's Newsday recently reported that nursing school applications grew more than double between 2003 and 2007, which pushed acceptance rates below fifty percent. Part of the problem is that many nursing faculty members are approaching retirement age - one of the factors that is also driving the broader nationwide shortage of nurses.

The newspaper also cites budget issues and a shortfall of clinical placements for students that are holding back greater growth of nursing school programs.

On any given week, newspapers around the country are reporting on state and local efforts to attract more nurses to a given area. One recruiting event in Michigan in January even featured free champagne, prizes and a trivia contest led by game show host Chuck Woolery. Elsewhere, hospitals have dealt with the shortage by recruiting nurses from countries like the Philippines.

If a nursing career appeals to you, there's never been a better time to explore your options and consider making a move.
