A professional boxer, fed up with the distance required to get medical treatment for his daughter, spent $250,000 of his own money to provide a clinic for the people of eastern New Orleans, according to the Times-Picayune.
Gregory Davis built the 1,600-square-foot primary healthcare clinic just nearby the Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital, which has been closed since Hurricane Katrina. Called the Champion Medical Center, it aims to provide routine checkups and services to deal with basic medical ailments.
According to Cynthia Kudji, the staff nurse practitioner, the clinic will be able to handle up to 40 patients a day. It has three examination rooms, a doctor's office, a waiting room lobby and a small triage area for patients. The clinic will perform Pap smears, breast exams, childhood immunizations, school and employee physicals as well as emergency care.
Davis, who moved to Eastover when he was 9, said the center will address the shortage of medical care that has plagued the neighborhood since Hurricane Katrina.
Nurses like Kudji are in a prime position to help those who need local access to services while their city recovers from difficult times. If this is the kind of work you would be interested in, maybe you should consider nursing school.
