Michigan is one of many states to announce recent steps to alleviate a nursing shortage that continues to be felt across the nation.

According to a recent Associated Press report, governor Jennifer Granholm's administration is distributing about $5 million to nine different nursing schools in Michigan with an eye on producing new instructors.

The report noted that the investment is likely to create spots for 610 nursing students and 156 clinical education students.

This is one of many steps being taken by states as well as the federal government to try to train more nurses nationwide due to soaring demand. Overall, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects demand for registered nurses to jump 23 percent by 2016.

The BLS notes that about 587,000 new nursing jobs are expected to be generated between now and 2016, with hundreds of thousands more openings potentially created as the current workforce approaches retirement age.
