The Baylor University Medical Center has been re-designated a Magnet hospital with a status of "Excellence in Nursing Services". The designation, awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is given to fewer than 6 percent of hospitals nationwide, and only 2 percent have received re-designation.

"ANCC told us 'you all have proven that nursing excellence is in Baylor's DNA' which got staff really excited," says Claudia Wilder, chief nursing officer. "The ANCC continued our conference call by applauding Baylor's commitment to evidence-based practice, nursing research and quality patient outcomes."

It is the kind of working environment you would aspire to be in as a professional nurse. Magnet hospitals retain and attract highly skilled nurses by providing them with the recognition they deserve, as well as educational opportunities and the best tools and technology. Magnet hospitals also show better nurse satisfaction, better patient satisfaction, and shorter hospital stays with better outcomes.

Baylor first achieved Magnet status in 2004, and had to reapply and pass an additional evaluation four years later in order to be re-designated as such.

If working at a first-class institution, recognized for its excellence in the field is a goal you have set for yourself, it might be time to consider going to nursing school.
