Minnesota's Mower County Public Health Nursing Service (PHNS) primary role is to do what they can to assure that health services are accessible and of high quality.
Last year, approximately 37,100 people used the nursing service for one reason or another, according to an article in the Austin Daily Herald.
"It was," Margene Gunderson, community health services director, said, "a very busy year for Public Health."
The breadth of issues the PHNS staff addresses could be described as impressive.
They assure an adequate local public health infrastructure is in place, promote healthy behavior, prevent the spread of infectious disease, protect against environmental health hazards and prepare for and respond to disasters.
Gunderson notes the last of these is something of a growth area, under the title of Public Health Preparedness/Pandemic Flu Planning. It's a section that's been tested with recent worries about swine flu. Public health is a huge responsibility, covering areas as diverse as family care and public outreach.
"We're not at full staff right now," said Gunderson. "That's always a challenge for us."
Gunderson's nursing staff does what it can to look after the health of their community. If you think that sort of challenging role is for you, perhaps you should look into a nursing degree.
